For this project we are asked to piece together sound files to create a soundscape that captures the essence and purpose of John Cage’s music. John Cage took sounds that one would call “ordinary” or “not musical“ to create his music. One of his most famous pieces is 4’33. One could say the song is silent, however, one also might notice that the song is actually created by what sounds happen during the performance. For this project, we are taking sound files gathered by our peers and creating music without traditional rhythm. We are creating music from the sounds we might hear every day.
My plan for this project is to create a piece that gives causes the listener to feel calm and hopeful. I plan on using the sounds of water, animals, and soft wind - given people have sourced these sounds. An idea I have is having different movements of the piece that each bring the listener into a more calm state of mind. Some images that represent the feelings I will attempt to evoke are below:
